What If SprinterTool 2020 does not locate my VIN?
If SprinterTool shows an error like:
“Vehicle identification number not found. Model/model designation are not correct. Datacard cannot be displayed.”
don’t worry — your Sprinter is still supported. It just means the local WIS database doesn’t contain the datacard for that specific VIN.
Follow these steps to get where you need to be.
Step 1 – Double-check your VIN entry
- Make sure you entered all 17 characters.
- Confirm there are no spaces before/after the VIN.
- Mercedes VINs never use the letters I, O, or Q – they’re always
1or0. - Try again in the WIS VIN search window inside SprinterTool.
If it still says VIN not found, go to Step 2.
Step 2 – Figure out your Sprinter’s generation (by year)
Look at the model year of your van and match it here:
-
1995–2006 → T1N / First-generation Sprinter (W901–W905)
-
2007–2018 → NCV3 Sprinter (W906)
-
2019–Present → VS30 Sprinter (W907/W910)
If you’re not sure, you can decode it from the VIN:
-
The 10th character of the VIN is the model year:
-
A = 2010, B = 2011, C = 2012, D = 2013, E = 2014, F = 2015, G = 2016, H = 2017, J = 2018 -
K = 2019, L = 2020, M = 2021, N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025
-
Now follow the path for your generation:
A) 2007–2018 – NCV3 Sprinter (W906) – VIN Not Found
This is the most common “VIN not found” scenario.
Your Sprinter is a W906 (NCV3) and is supported, but your offline WIS database doesn’t have its datacard (common on late 2017–2018 vans).
1. Use manual W906 selection
Inside WIS/ASRA in SprinterTool:
- Choose Vehicle Group:
Light Transporter - Choose Model:
W906 - On the next screen, manually select:
- Body style: Cargo / Passenger / Crew / Cab/Chassis
- Wheelbase: 144″ / 170″
- Roof height: Standard / High Roof
- Drivetrain: RWD / 4×4
- Weight class / badge: 2500, 3500, 316, 319, etc.
This gets you into the correct body + wheelbase + drivetrain “bucket” for your van.
2. Then choose the engine variant
Once the model is selected, WIS may ask for an engine/output level, such as:
-
211 / 311 / 411 CDI
-
214 / 314 / 414 CDI
-
216 / 316 / 416 CDI
-
OM651 vs OM642, etc.
Pick the one that matches your:
-
Rear badge (e.g. 316 CDI, 319 CDI), or
-
Engine type (2.1L 4-cyl vs 3.0L V6).
💡 For most chassis, body, brake, and interior procedures, any variant with the same generation, body style, wheelbase, roof, drivetrain, and fuel type will give you the correct instructions.
The exact engine code matters more for parts ordering than for general repair info.
B) 2019+ – VS30 Sprinter (W907/W910)
For 2019 and newer Sprinters (VS30 platform), WIS often forces you to pick from a long list of 907xxx / 910xxx codes.
You have two options:
Option 1 – Use the Sprinter Model Wizard (recommended)
On sprintermanual.com, go to the Sprinter Model Wizard and:
-
(Optional) Enter your VIN – it will confirm if you’re VS30.
-
Choose:
-
Market (North America / Europe)
-
Body type (Cargo, Crew, Passenger, Cab/Chassis)
-
Wheelbase (144 / 170 / 170 Extended)
-
Roof height (Standard / High)
-
Drivetrain (RWD / AWD / FWD where applicable)
-
Badged model (2500, 3500XD, 316, 419, etc.)
-
The wizard will give you:
-
A recommended 907 or 910 model code (e.g.
907633,907643,907657,910631) -
A plain-English description
-
The exact path to click in WIS:
Light Transporter → 907 → 907643
Use that inside SprinterTool 2020.
Then, just like with W906, pick the correct engine output when WIS asks (211/311/411 vs 214/314/414 vs 216/316/416, or gas/eSprinter variants).
Option 2 – Select 907/910 manually inside WIS
If you don’t have the wizard open:
-
Inside WIS:
-
Choose
Light Transporter -
Then
W907(vans) orW910(cab/chassis)
-
-
From the list of 907xxx / 910xxx entries, choose the one whose text best matches:
-
Your body style (cargo, crew, passenger)
-
Your wheelbase (144 / 170 / extended)
-
Your roof height
-
Your weight class / badge (2500, 3500, 3500XD, etc.)
-
-
Confirm that the description looks right before opening documents.
Quick Summary For Users
You can add this little “TL;DR” box:
If SprinterTool doesn’t find your VIN:
Your Sprinter is still supported.
For 2007–2018 (W906): select
Light Transporter → W906and choose the closest body/wheelbase/roof/drivetrain.For 2019+ (W907/W910): use the Sprinter Model Wizard on SprinterManual.com to find the right 907/910 code.
Then select the engine variant on the next screen in WIS.
VIN lookup is a convenience feature – it’s not required to access repair information.

Important:
If your Sprinter is a T1N (1995–2006) or NCV3 (2007–2018),
just use the VIN search inside SprinterTool 2020.
You do not need this wizard.
This tool is only for 2019+ VS30 Sprinters (W907/W910) where WIS shows a long list of 907xxx / 910xxx codes.
How to Choose the Correct Engine Variant in WIS
After you select the recommended 907/910 model code inside WIS/ASRA, you may see another screen asking you to choose an engine or power level, such as:
- 211 / 311 / 411 CDI – lower output diesel
- 214 / 314 / 414 CDI – mid output diesel
- 216 / 316 / 416 CDI – higher output diesel
- 119 / 190 / 2.0 Gas – gasoline or high output variants (depending on market)
In most cases, you can match this to the badging on the rear door (for example, a 316 CDI will normally use the 216/316/416-level engine option in WIS).
If you are only working on the body, chassis, brakes, or interior, any engine variant with the same fuel type (diesel vs gas) will still give you the correct procedures.
The ultra-specific engine code is more critical when ordering parts than when viewing workshop procedures.
If you are unsure, select the engine variant that most closely matches your rear badge and horsepower rating, or consult your VIN data card for the exact engine code.
Sprinter Model Wizard
Use this wizard if your VIN is not found in WIS, or if you want to manually select the correct VS30 (W907/W910) model.
The wizard works with or without a VIN.
